We've all been waiting for the 2.0 firmware update day and just like many of you, Thursday at 11:59pm, I had iTunes fired up ready to download the update at 12:00. But after many failed attempts and getting the "there is no update available" message, I gave up and went to bed.

Friday morning I got up and checked iTunes again, nothing...

As an iTouch owner, I was sure there would be some sort of separate download for my version of the iTouch 2.0 firmware that was released by Apple yesterday. Unfortunately, there wasn't. I was stuck in line downloading behind all of the existing iPhone folks as well as the slew of new 3G iPhone buyers.

Aside from leaked links to 255mb files that were for updating the two devices, Apple provided no direct download for my Windows machine...I, as many of you were, was stuck at the mercy of the iTunes servers.

As the day progressed, I found this link on the Apple website. I was sure the update had been released:

Unfortunately, upon clicking it and launching iTunes, I was met with the same "no update" message from overnight.

The day moved on and I was keeping up with all of the iPhone news on Gizmodo, Engadget, MacRumors, and Digg.

I went home for lunch and fired up iTunes for another attempt. Yay! There's an update available!

I clicked the Learn More button and it took me to the same iPod Summary page...this time, it stated that I still had the current version. I clicked and clicked but it never officially let me download anything. A bit later, the "There is an update" screen changed and it started saying, once again, that no update was available.

iTunes went back and forth all day telling me either there was an update available but it wouldn't download it, or it would tell me my version was the current version.

Eventually the link attempted to connect to the server, but like many of you, I was met with this repeatedly:

So after nearly 24 hours from my first attempt to update on update day, my PDA's RSS reader buzzed at me at 12:32am this morning telling me there was something new on the MacRumors.com RSS feed...sure enough, it was a post about the official, and 24 hour late iTouch update being available. I crawled out of bed, fired up iTunes, hit the Update button and sure enough, the 2.0 file started downloading.

I woke up this morning with much anticipation and indeed the App Store is on my iTouch!

Quick review of some of the things I've messed with:
Twitterific (free) = very cool for Twitter users. Thumbs up.
Super Monkey Ball = $9.99 but worth it. I've already burned up my battery playing this today. Thumbs up.
AOL Radio. Found a punk channel, a metal channel, surf rock channel, uncensored comedy channel. Thumbs up.
Pandora, a music streamer. Tied right into my existing account and in no time I was streaming Muffs Radio. Thumbs Up.

I did download a few stinkers that I need to get rid of, but overall, aside from the 24 hour delay, the update for the iTouch is awesome!

Now, just a few hundred more donations and I might well be on my way to owning that hopefully-released-in-September Macbook!!!
