Kindle iPhone App missing Text-To-Speech!

clock March 4, 2009 06:34 by author Corby
I haven't had a lot of time to read books since my daughters were born.  When the Kindle version 1 was released by Amazon a few years ago, it was so far under my radar that I had no curiosity about the device at all.  In fact, the only time I ever really heard anything about the Kindle was from techy podcasts I enjoy (GeekBrief.TV, TWIT).

Recently Amazon released their update of the Kindle, version 2, and once again my curiosity was zilch.  Then last week, one day after I got home from work, I had live.twit.tv streaming to my MacBook and all of the sudden Leo Laport was gone from the screen and there was a new, pretty Kindle....reading to me.

Leo had left for lunch and instead of just leaving the cameras on an empty room for all of my fellow nerds, he had the Kindle propped up, turned on the text-to-speech functionality and the Kindle just read.

After seeing that the device was capable of reading books to me, my interest grew.  As a coder (.net, c#) I spend nearly all of my day in front of 3 screens with an iTouch filled with podcasts and punk rock girl bands blasting in my ear.  On occasion, my podcasts run dry, I'm tired of the same punk songs, and Pandora just isn't cutting it...it would sure be nice to fire up a book-like scenario.

Please note, prior to my discovery of podcasts back when the only people doing it were Dawn and Drew and Adam Curry, I was an Audible subscriber.  I had burned through countless books and only left Audible as a subscriber because of the free content podcasts began to provide me (that and I was poor and couldn't really scrape up the $20 a month for books any longer...still can't, actually).

Now recently, probably thanks to the advertising deal Leo Laport has with Audible and that the ads seem to constantly be in my ear, I have considered going back to Audible for the occasional "now and then" book session but the price?  Not sure....and the Kindle 2 price?  Still not sure.  Plus you have to buy the books individually?  No way!

Today I found out that the folks at Amazon have put out an iPhone app that, in essence, turns your iPhone or iTouch into a Kindle!  This excited me greatly!  I won't have to plop out the ridiculous cost of a Kindle 2 to get Kindle 2 the functionality that I'm interested in, mainly the text-to-speech function.

I installed the app, found a free book on the Kindle website to try things out and after about 5 minutes of trying to figure out how the heck to get the text-to-speech part of the iPhone App to work, became GREATLY DISAPPOINTED that the functionality was NOT THERE in the iPhone App.  It's just flat out not there.

I am never going to buy a Kindle.  I don't read enough books to make it worth the investment.  I am probably not going back to Audible any time soon...same reason.  But for a now-and-then book blast on my iTouch, I would really like Amazon to offer the text-to-speech option for their iPhone app.  That, I'd be willing to pay for.  I'd gladly buy your App Store app for a couple of bucks and be willing to shell out about $10 a book if my iTouch could read the books to me via the application.  Until then, this icon will sit dormant on my iTouch with about 80 other unused icons, spur of the moment freebies that I tried out and never bothered to delete.

Amazon, you're missing the boat.  Enable the text-to-speech functionality of you iPhone app and charge for it.  You could even leave the version you provide for free as the "lite" version.  I'm the idea guy, you're the money men.  Make it happen.

App Store app review, iCam. Video on your iPhone or iTouch

clock February 26, 2009 14:40 by author Corby

Review: iCam from SKJM, LLC
Purchase with this button: iCam

Back in December, I posted my iTunes App Store wish list.  To quickly recap my desired app, I needed a way to stream video from my unibody Macbook (unboxing) to my iTouch / iPhone (unboxing) Shortly thereafter, a commenter left me a message telling me about one app that might suit my needs, iCam.  Produced by SKJM, LLC , this app was exactly what I was looking for.

The initial setup of the $4.99 app was pretty simple.  First I installed it on my iTouch, then I install a client (iCamSource) on my MacBook.  These two pieces of software work together to stream my iSight camera video directly to my iTouch via my iTouch's wifi connection to my home network.

In the iCamSource program, you basically type in a name and password for your stream and hit Start.  Then on your iTouch iCam app, you enter the same stream name and password.  Voila, our video should stream right to your iPhone / iTouch.

Initially, though, it didn't work.  I posted a message on the forum for the product's website, the app creator emailed me directly, I sent him my IP address, and he fixed something to get me working.  Also, initially the app did not stream sound.  The most recent update to the app, though, has now included the sound feature. Yay!

The other cool thing about this app is that you can actually stream more than one video source (up to 4), provided you have extra computers and web cams around.

All in all, this app is perfect for what I need it for and was well worth the $4.99.  And now with the new fix that adds sound to the video stream, it's even better.

iTouch crash, a fix, Apple totally HAS me.

clock February 11, 2009 07:32 by author Corby

I was rocking some Keith and the Girl this morning, one of my favorite comedy podcasts…a couple in NYC doing a show from their home.  Great, great stuff...my daily delight.  15 minutes into Episode 896 and I hear a weird noise…then I hear nothing.  Nothing at all.  I glance at my iTouch screen and it’s black.  I try the center button, nothing.  I try the top reset button….nothing.  I try plugging it into my charger even though I know it’s got a full charge….nothing.

I quickly went through my mental checkbook, realized it would be 4 pay periods before I could part with $220 (recent Wii purchases have killed me financially), and nearly splattered my drawers.  2 months without an iTouch?  No way, can’t do it.  I’m too hooked.  My Podcasts, my Pandora, my AOL Radio, my other apps.  Just 13 months into owning my first piece of Apple equipment, the iTouch purchased in January 2008, I realize how much I need the iTouch.  After just a seconds worth of thinking about it, I need my October purchased MacBook.

Apple HAS me.  I have become so dependent on my daily routines, which center around having the iTouch in my ear nearly all day and the MacBook connected to my fingers all night, that I can't fathom what it would be like not to have my iTouch...not to have my Macbook.  If it came right down to it, if my iTouch crapped out on me this morning, I'd be going to the Apple Store over lunch, buying the newest 8GB iTouch, and then spending the next 3 weeks eBaying things from around the house that "I don't really need" in order to finance the "emergency" iTouch purchase.  Am I disgusting?  Am I sick in the head?

Yea, I have a few other MP3 players laying around that would do the job (sort of) to get my daily podcasts pushed into my brain that I could use while I save up $50 at a time in order to pay cash for a new iTouch...but they're nowhere near as epic as the iTouch. I realy feel that going from an iTouch to anything else would be such a downgrade, such a step backwards, the perfect example of devolution that I just couldn't handle it.

Luckily after holding the button on front and the button on top for about 10 seconds, the lovely, glorious shiny, silver Apple logo appeared on the dark screen and moments later I was back into the Keith and the Girl episode.  Now, though, I am worried that the year old iTouch is on the brink of death.  I better start saving up for the inevitable now...

Apple flat out has me.

iPhone / iTouch App update plus podcast download causes crash

clock January 8, 2009 07:35 by author Corby

Just found this out, thought I'd share.  For some reason, iTunes skipped downloading a podcast episode last night of http://www.keithandthegirl.com and since I have listened to every show of theirs in order, all 871 of them so far, this freaked me out.  872 was missing, but 873 was there.  So I went to iTunes using my iTouch, selected the episode for download, and off it went.  A few minutes later I thought it would be a good time to update any Apps I have on the device.  Two updates were available and when  hit the "Update All", the iTouch crashed back to the desktop.  Tried again, same result, tried again, same result.

It appears that, unlike a PC/Mac that can handle downloads from multiple sources and stores them in some sort of queue, the iTouch / iPhone doesn't have this ability.  If you're downloading App store updates, you can't download a podcast from iTunes at the same time....and visa versa, as I described above.  The apps are so independent of each other and the iTouch / iPhone seem not to notice or care, that nothing running on the device knows what else is running on the device and when you do something super crazy like try to download a podcast and update your apps at the same time, all hell breaks loose.

I guess I shouldn't complain...The podcast download is nearly done, I'll be listening to my show in no time, and then  can update my app store apps.  I just found it odd that such a whicked cool device like my iTouch can only download one thing at a time...

iPhone App Review Field Runners

clock December 8, 2008 20:46 by author Corby

Ah, review time.  I recently purchased Field Runners at $4.99 for my iTouch, one of the few apps I have actually had to pay cash for.  I think aside from this game, I have only ever purchased Monkey Ball (thumbs up, but thumbs sideways for difficulty) and CroMag Rally (thumbs up for a nice racer, but thumbs down for bad controls), though I have about 75 other apps and games that have come from the FREE world.

As an avid fan of Desktop Tower Defense, I have been waiting for a "tower defense" style game for the iTouch/iPhone....and man, is this thing the ticket!

Although the game seems to initially only come with two maps, one that sends bad guys from left to right while the other sends them left to right and up to down, I believe that if you master the 3 levels of easy, medium, and hard, perhaps you will open the door for more maps.

There are only 4 types of towers, where as the web version of DTD has a handful more, the 4 types of towers in this game seem to do the trick in terms of fun.  First is a cannon barrel that when upgraded for $4 (per each upgrade of two, per each piece of equipment) fires double bullets at the bad guys.  Second is a sort of squirter tower that shoots green globs of slow-down-ness at bad guys.  Upgrades for this beast are $5 each, again a 2-time upgrade limit.  Third is a rocket launcher that costs $20 to start and $15 to upgrade each of it's two times.  Lastly is a lightning tower that really seems to blast the bad guys with bolts of blue death.  Each upgrade for this $70 initial tower comes in at $50.

The strategy of DTD carries over just fine for Field Runners.  It seems best to create a sort of diagonal zig zag forcing the bad guys to go back and forth between the same towers with each pass.  Heavy upgrades in the center of the screen where the bad guys pass through will help to ensure that the flying helicopters that normally tend to kick my butt get knocked out of the sky before making it to the other side.  Another thing to take into consideration, along with upgrading everything to the utmost, is that many of these things move fast in the small space of the field and even though you may zig zag the enemies through your maze of towers, slowing them down is key!  Squirt towers, fully upgraded, mixed with fully upgraded rocket towers and lightning towers will be your best bet, using the cheapest cannon as blockers to create your zig zag around the edges.

On a scale of ten, in terms of value, time consumption, graphics, and fun, I have to give Field Runners from the Apple App Store for the iPhone or iTouch a 10 out of 10.  Please note, though, this game is a BATTERY HOG.  After about 1.5 hours, you'll need to plug in your iPhone or iTouch.

Here is the direct link to download the app into iTunes.  Enjoy!  App Store direct download of Field Runners.

3G hits Omaha, AT&T iPhone Gen 2 users rejoice!

clock December 8, 2008 16:18 by author Corby

I had a conversation today with a co-worker/buddy named Brian.  He pointed out that his second generation iPhone's "E" had been replaced with a "3G".  This news should excite all iPhone users in the Omaha Nebraska area as it appears official that AT&T's 3G network has been activated in our town!

Brian was kind enough to share a screenshot of his iPhone's desktop showing the new 3G graphic near the upper left as confirmation.

iPhone App Christmas wish

clock December 2, 2008 20:25 by author Corby

Of the hundreds of iPhone applications I've downloaded to my iTouch, I have found many that I love.  Fieldrunner, Monkey Ball, AOL Radio, just to name a few.  Granted, most of what I download are free but I would absolutely be willing to pay for one particular creation.

What I am looking for is an application that would allow me to stream video from my Macbook to my iTouch using my home's wi-fi network.  Why would I want such a thing?  Well, for one, I have two daughters who enjoy super long baths.  If I were able to set up my Macbook's iSight camera to stream live video to my iTouch while I went around the house and cleaned things up, it would be amazing!  Also, I'd like to be able to do the same thing when the kids are in their play room.  Macbook in the corner, iSight turned on, iPhone app running catching the live video stream so I can see them playing at all times.

Now, I assume that if the iPhone was able to handle Flash, I could accomplish this task with ease by creating a free account at www.ustream.com or some other similar video streaming service and then access the URL through Safari to see the video in real time, but regardless of the rumor mill regarding Adobe Flash on the iPhone, nothing solid, proven, and definitive has been announced, at least for the near future.

So aside from my few examples, there could be hundreds of applications for such a streaming video feature from a Macbook (or PC for that matter) to an iPhone or iTouch, whether via an iPhone App or some sort of web-based service that would jive fine with Safari on Apple's mobile devices.  Have an employee out of the office that should be able to see the big meeting?  Want to stream a live video podcast and allow iPhone users to see it anywhere in the world in real time?  News networks could broadcast repeats of their evening news on their servers and have things accessible via the iPhone on demand.  Anywhere where there is content being created or action going on that someone not there might like to view, this "wishful thinking" iPhone application would be perfect for.

If anyone knows of any suggestions that would help me accomplish this sort of functionality using my iTouch, please let me know.  If you're a developer and you're working on something like this, let me know!  If you know more than I do about the potential of the iPhone/iTouch eventually getting Adobe Flash, let me know!

iPhone / iTouch 2.2 Framework, direct podcast downloads!

clock November 28, 2008 09:04 by author Corby

As a heavy podcast listener since the early days of Keith and the Girl, Dawn and Drew, Daily Source Code, Bibb and Yaz, The Bitterest Pill, The Twisted Pickle Show, Nate and Di, and countless others that have come and gone, come back again, and gone again, having someone yap in my ear during my workday has become a mainstay of my existence.  In fact, on rare occasion when my mp3 player isn’t with me in my cubicle, I feel almost like I’m wearing my underwear on the outside of my pants…something just isn’t right.

Until I purchased my iTouch in Jan. of ’08 I had never been a slave to iTunes.  I had always used Juice as my podcatcher and websites like www.PodcastPickle.com and www.PodcastAlley.com to find new content and get RSS subscription information about shows I was interested in.  Then, in the world of drag-n-drop Windows XP, I was simply able to connect my mp3 player to the computer via USB and transfer whatever new .mp3 files rested in my ‘podcast downloads’ directory right onto my player, leaving for hours of entertainment while slaving away in the corporate world.  There’s nothing quite like working on some serious report while listening to Keith and Chemda of www.keithandthegirl.com discuss painting the faces of disgusting, booger covered, flakey skinned children.

Honestly, my entire life might be different now if any one of the 4 display Zune devices at my local Best Buy had actually worked.  On that cold January day I went to the Best Buy after hours of research on the internet, reading forums posts, comparisons, and toiling, I had decided on a Zune primarily for its ability to connect to your home network and sync podcasts automatically.  When none of the display models worked, either frozen on a screen, unresponsive to my thumb trying to navigate around, or the other two that just plain wouldn’t fire up, I turned 180 degrees, saw a beautiful iTouch box with a picture of John Lennon on it, and plopped out my saved up Christmas money with eager anticipation.  When I got home with the new device, I did one of the geekiest things I had ever done up to that point…I created an unboxing video and stuck it up on www.YouTube.com for the entire world to see.  Shortly after is when I became a slave to iTunes.

As any iPod owner knows, if you’ve got one of these you must have iTunes.  Yes there are work-arounds and hacks all over the interwebs about bypassing this memory hog of a program but the hassle is hardly worth it.  The XP machine I had installed iTunes on has, over the last year, become exclusively an iTunes podcatching machine.  This is its only job.  Sit in the corner of the bedroom, iTunes open, and download new podcasts.  Wait for me to plug in the iTouch, send it the new podcasts while marking listened to ones for removal, and repeat….over and over, day in, day out.  Why waste all of that processing power to do one simple task that Juice used to do for me with a much smaller footprint and memory requirement?  Because it’s just easier not to do anything else on that PC.  It is a little old, slow, sometimes unresponsive, and there’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning, heading to work with a hopefully full of new podcasts iTouch, and realizing upon firing it up after sitting down at my cube for a hard day’s worth of work that there are no new podcasts because god forbid I left Firefox and iTunes open over night, iTunes crashed, and I have nothing new to listen to all day long.

Well this problem appears to have disappeared for me with the newest firmware upgrade of the iPhone / iTouch.  Firmware release 2.2 now supports direct podcast downloads!  As a prime example of what was just described, yesterday was Thanksgiving.  Some of the daily shows I listen to probably didn’t put out a show yesterday, but I know there were episodes from Wednesday that were not on my iTouch this morning.  So wishing to try out the new direct download feature, clicked the new ‘Get more episodes’ option under the Keith and the Girl podcasts heading and was taken to iTunes.  Granted, it would have been much more convenient if iTunes had known I was coming from the Keith and the Girl RSS feed and taken me directly to their download page instead of taking me to a generic catch-all iTunes podcast page, but after a quick KATG search, I was able to download two shows that my podcatching iTunes machine at home had for some yet unknown reason, not put on my iTouch before I left for work this morning.  Even the animation when you click the ‘download’ button for each episode was cool.  It sort of shrink-bounce-drops right into the Downloads tab with grace, beauty, and anticipated excitement.  It’s almost as though the file is grateful to be sent t the Downloads tab.

Now I had heard speculation and rumors about the iTunes over-the-air downloads being limited to shows with file sizes of 10mb or less.  This very well may be true for the iPhone folks going over AT&T’s network, but I am very happy to say that I was able to download two 80MB Keith and the Girl episodes via my work’s Wi-Fi network within minutes of requesting the files and they now happily reside right where they should, the podcasts tab under the Music button right in the Keith and the Girl directory.

Again, it would be quite nice if I was in Music > Podcasts > The Bitterest Pill’s episode list, clicked the ‘Get More Episodes’ option and I landed on The Bitterest Pill’s RSS feed inside iTunes without having to search for the show by title, but perhaps that’ll be something the fine folks in Cupertino fix in the next firmware release.  For now, I am quite happy to be able to download any podcast out of thin air without having to physically connect my iTouch to the dying beast of a machine that has been wasting away in the corner of my bedroom as the iTunes slave.  Maybe now I can bring new life into that machine with a lovely Linux distro.

2.1 firmware = YAY!

clock September 13, 2008 19:40 by author Corby
Finally, after two failed firmware releases prior to this one, the 2.1 firmware release for my iTouch DOES fix my app store application crash problems! Yay! On top of that, the iTouch no longer deletes podcasts I have not 100% completed, I can see how long podcasts are from the list of shows instead of having to go into each podcast, hit play, and then check how long before it is over, and did I mention the app store apps don't crash?

I'm very pleased (so far) with the 2.1 firmware upgrade. Now, if Apple would just get their stuff together and release the new MacBook line, I'll officially make 'the switch'!

Apple's event was a disappointment

clock September 10, 2008 19:39 by author Corby
I've been reading the rumors and speculation about Apple not introducing their new line of MacBooks at yesterday's event for weeks now...and I was really hoping that there would be that "one more thing..." moment where POW, new MacBooks...but as I read the live stream from Gizmodo.com, it was clear that there was nothing of value to come out of the Apple event for me.

I don't care about Nanos...colors or not. I don't care about the new iTouch and frankly I'm pissed that they didn't include an external speaker and external volume controls on the first edition of the iTouch, the one I have.

And the new iTunes to me = not much of a change. The Genius Bar, touted by some as iTunes version of Pandora holds no value for me. I, after all, don't purchase music on iTunes. I use it primarily as a podcatcher.

All of the 'new' music I have is downloaded from band websites or through MySpace pages of bands. I don't listen to the typical radio fair that most people do...I can tell you you would be hard pressed to have ever heard any of the punk girl bands I dig the most on the radio. Seriously...have you ever heard Portugal Japan, Angry Amputees, Go Betty Go, The Gore Gore Girls, or Cootie Shot on the radio? I thought not...

So new genius bar for suggestions I don't care about, new nanos that I don't care about, a new iTouch that has features that should have been included in the first edition of the iTouch...and that's it.

Oh, I guess they promise that the App Store App crash problem will be fixed on Friday...which will be nice because my delete/reinstall trick hasn't worked for nearly 2 weeks on my iTouch and I haven't been able to use a single downloaded app.... I guess if anything, if Friday's firmware upgrade DOES fix my app store app crashes, that will at least be SOMETHING....

Now...I just await the impending and who knows when it'll happen MacBook release... Hurry up Apple....hurry up...

the rumors

clock September 1, 2008 19:35 by author Corby
Rumors of the processor supply problem coupled with the fact that the Sept 9th Apple announcement focusing so far (in the geek media like Gizmodo, Engadget, AppleInsider, MacRumors) on iPod and iPod Touch updates has me worried.

I can hold off a while, as I continue to sack $$ away for the new MacBook, but I am really hoping that Apple doesn't split the iPod update news with the MacBook line update. Who knows at this point, but we're getting down to the wire and I am excited.

Once I have the MacBook, I intend to detail the differences between the Mac OS and Windows XP, which I hope will help other future switchers determine if going from one OS to another is the right choice.

Well, I sit here, awaiting more rumors and the impending Apple press day regarding their product line.

Oh, have I mentioned I am so sick and tired of my iTouch crashing over and over every time I try to launch an App Store app? *Sigh* By the way, search for a game called Squares. It is the most fun I've had on the iTouch since I bought the thing. I don't know why, but the game just flat out has me hooked...hooked nearly as much as Desktop Tower Defense 1.5!

Apple says Sept. for a fix.

clock August 20, 2008 19:34 by author Corby
I was reading Apple Insider today and was pleased to see an article about how someone emailed Jobs regarding App Store application crashes. Steve replied and stated that the crash would be fixed sometime in September.

Steve Jobs vows iPhone app crash fix for September

Hopefully this will be the official fix, as I am tired of my apps crashing left and right for no reason. I sure hope that the new Macbook line that I am saving my pennies for (and kindly taking your donations for right here on helpmeswitch.com) doesn't suffer similar problems...

iPhone and iTouch 2.0.2 framework update did not fix app crashes again!

clock August 19, 2008 19:31 by author Corby
Many of us around the world have been waiting for yet another Apple update to the iPhone and iTouch to hopefully fix the crashing App Store applications problem.

Well I find it unfortunate to report that I just updated my iTouch to version 2.0.2 and sure enough, it did NOT fix the problem. I attempted to launch an app that was on the iTouch prior to the 2.0.2 update and it crashed to the iTouch desktop just as the 2.0 framework and 2.0.1 framework did.

I believe my uninstall an app, reinstall the same app from the iTouch App Store, don't touch anything while the install is happening trick still works to get my App Store apps back up and running. Please see the video I made to show you how to do it here: http://helpmeswitch-pctomac.blogspot.com/2008/08/how-to-fix-itouchiphone-app-store.html

Come on Apple....come on...

24 hours of iPhone update hell

clock July 12, 2008 19:26 by author Corby
We've all been waiting for the 2.0 firmware update day and just like many of you, Thursday at 11:59pm, I had iTunes fired up ready to download the update at 12:00. But after many failed attempts and getting the "there is no update available" message, I gave up and went to bed.

Friday morning I got up and checked iTunes again, nothing...

As an iTouch owner, I was sure there would be some sort of separate download for my version of the iTouch 2.0 firmware that was released by Apple yesterday. Unfortunately, there wasn't. I was stuck in line downloading behind all of the existing iPhone folks as well as the slew of new 3G iPhone buyers.

Aside from leaked links to 255mb files that were for updating the two devices, Apple provided no direct download for my Windows machine...I, as many of you were, was stuck at the mercy of the iTunes servers.

As the day progressed, I found this link on the Apple website. I was sure the update had been released:

Unfortunately, upon clicking it and launching iTunes, I was met with the same "no update" message from overnight.

The day moved on and I was keeping up with all of the iPhone news on Gizmodo, Engadget, MacRumors, and Digg.

I went home for lunch and fired up iTunes for another attempt. Yay! There's an update available!

I clicked the Learn More button and it took me to the same iPod Summary page...this time, it stated that I still had the current version. I clicked and clicked but it never officially let me download anything. A bit later, the "There is an update" screen changed and it started saying, once again, that no update was available.

iTunes went back and forth all day telling me either there was an update available but it wouldn't download it, or it would tell me my version was the current version.

Eventually the link attempted to connect to the server, but like many of you, I was met with this repeatedly:

So after nearly 24 hours from my first attempt to update on update day, my PDA's RSS reader buzzed at me at 12:32am this morning telling me there was something new on the MacRumors.com RSS feed...sure enough, it was a post about the official, and 24 hour late iTouch update being available. I crawled out of bed, fired up iTunes, hit the Update button and sure enough, the 2.0 file started downloading.

I woke up this morning with much anticipation and indeed the App Store is on my iTouch!

Quick review of some of the things I've messed with:
Twitterific (free) = very cool for Twitter users. Thumbs up.
Super Monkey Ball = $9.99 but worth it. I've already burned up my battery playing this today. Thumbs up.
AOL Radio. Found a punk channel, a metal channel, surf rock channel, uncensored comedy channel. Thumbs up.
Pandora, a music streamer. Tied right into my existing account and in no time I was streaming Muffs Radio. Thumbs Up.

I did download a few stinkers that I need to get rid of, but overall, aside from the 24 hour delay, the update for the iTouch is awesome!

Now, just a few hundred more donations and I might well be on my way to owning that hopefully-released-in-September Macbook!!!
